About Me

I have been developing websites since 1995 for fun first, profit second. My first commercial website was based on Final Fantasy 7, offering free game tips and selling strategy guides through Amazon.com (back when Amazon only sold books). The commission then was a high 15% per strategy guide. I think the idea of being open 24 hours a day 7 days a week consumed me, and was the initial draw for my interest in web development. I was young and enjoyed staying up late, which was a natural side effect of being an Internet addict. At times I can be quite impulsive, and loved the idea of working many hours straight on a project, providing a base for residual traffic into the future.

If you only take one thing from this blog, this is it…

Care about the website you produce. Effective search engine marketing is less about technical ‘tricks’, and more about the quality of your work. Think about how the following points are connected:

  • Google became successful because their search engine yielded quality results (not porn on every search term).
  • Google needs an automated system for deciding which sites rank higher than others.
  • You write a quality article on “ergonomic chairs”. How does Google decide where you rank? How does Google assign authority?
  • Does it make sense to spend your time more on clever ’seo tricks’, or more time on the quality and usefulness of your website?
